The bouzouki is of Greek origin, but was "adopted" by Irish musicians on the 60's. The round-backed Greek model was changed to a flat back, and 2 extra strings were added to give the typical Irish bouzouki.
The most common tunings for accompaniment are GDAd and ADAd; GDAe is sometimes used.
The bouzouki is particularly suited to the accompaniment of Irish music because of its open sound, and it the possibility of playing modal chords and a mixture of harmonic and melodic accompaniment, to enhance all the nuances of the music.
Recommended listening : Planxty, Nomos, Alec Finn (De Danaan)
