The Irish flute dates from the 19th century, and the great oEnglish makers of the period like Rudall and Boosey, whose flutes are still used as models today.
The flute has the same fingering as the whistle, and is made ofwood (African Blackwood being the wood of choice) or, more recently, of polymer (a hard, dense,synthetic material)
